AR pistols are a great platform for beginners who are in between stepping up from pistol rounds to the more powerful rifle rounds. Since many of them come in pistol caliber they are the perfect go-between. Lighter recoil and more stability will help build the confidence to step it up to the larger calibers. Of course experienced shooters also enjoy AR pistols because of their versatility and portability.
The concept has been around for awhile but in the past few years AR pistols have really taken off with the adoption of arm braces. Prior to that, AR pistols were seen as unwieldy and inaccurate. At most a fun toy to bring to the range but not one to rely on for everyday use as a personal defence weapon. With the arm brace providing support, shooters began taking to the platform as their go to and its popularity surged. As with all firearms, which one you choose should reflect your needs and doing the proper research goes a long way.
Now to get into the nitty gritty of AR pistols and the rules that go with the stabilizing brace. The first rule is that it must be capable of being used as an arm brace for single handed firing. What that means is the velcro strap that is the usual form for the stabilizer cannot be removed. A stabilizing brace can be used shouldered as that does not change it to being a butt stock. If you were to modify the brace in a way that makes it unusable as an arm brace then you will be in trouble with the ATF as you now changed the classification of the firearm to a short barreled rifle. Fortunately, most AR pistols come with stabilizing braces off the shelf so it isn’t something to stress over too much.
